CBSD Implements Volunteer Firefighters Tax Credit Program to Boost Community Service and Membership

COLUMBIA, PA – November 2, 2023 - The Columbia Borough School District (CBSD) has taken a significant step towards enhancing community safety and engagement by adopting the Volunteer Firefighters Tax Credit Program. During the recent school board meeting held on October 19th, CBSD became one of the first educational institutions to introduce this program in Lancaster County, highlighting the district's commitment to supporting their local volunteer fire company.

Over the years, studies have shown a concerning decline in the number of volunteer firefighters across the nation. In 1970, there were around 300,000 volunteer firefighters, which has now dwindled to approximately 30,000. This emphasizes the urgent need to encourage more individuals to join the ranks of these selfless community heroes.

The Columbia Borough Fire Department has 56 active volunteer firefighters and responds to around 750 dispatches annually. These dedicated individuals are on the front lines, protecting our community and ensuring residents' safety. However, as the nationwide trend suggests, recruiting and retaining volunteers has become increasingly challenging.

Fire Chief Scott Ryno, a dedicated member of the Columbia Borough Fire Department, expressed gratitude for the school board's decision. " This program will provide significant value to the recruitment and retention efforts of the volunteer fire department. On behalf of the volunteer firefighters, we thank the school board and administration for recognizing the importance of volunteer firefighters and for adopting this tax rebate program. ," Chief Ryno said.

The Volunteer Firefighters Tax Credit Program aims to incentivize new members to join and motivate current volunteers to continue their service. This program is a testament to the CBSD's unwavering support for the safety and well-being of the Columbia community.

CBSD Superintendent, Dr. Ashley Rizzo, noted, "We are proud to be among the first school districts in Lancaster County to adopt the Volunteer Firefighters Tax Credit Program. Our school board believes in the importance of community service and recognizes the invaluable contributions of volunteer firefighters. We hope that this initiative will encourage more individuals to step forward and join this dedicated team."

This progressive step taken by the Columbia Borough School District signifies a commitment to community safety and reinforces the vital role of volunteer firefighters in safeguarding the well-being of our residents. As the program takes effect, it is anticipated that more community members will be inspired to volunteer and serve their fellow citizens, bolstering the resilience of the entire community.
